Leadership and Accountability

Deborah Thomas's introduction to the December 2018 issue.

"For me the critical questions raised by the events at HAU did not concern publishing but instead had to do with the ethics of our scholarly and intellectual relationships across the axes of power that structure them. . . . As we work to put into place institutional safeguards that might begin to meaningfully address these issues, we must remain mindful of the research findings that suggest that transparency, policy, and oversight alone do not transform our relationships with each other. We must also seek to enact forms of compassion that reflect a boundless recognition of the worth and value of each other."
